THRIVING IN GP PRACTICE

A one-day programme for International Medical Graduates in GP Training

This interactive programme focusses on interpersonal skills for effective working in GP practice. We’ll be taking a closer look at communication, and the impact of context and individual perspectives, with the focus on the consultation conversation. You will be invited to reflect on your own communication style and offered practical suggestions for enhancing your current interpersonal skills so that you are able to manage the transition to General Practice with confidence. Along the way, you will also gain some ‘insider’ information about language and communication in the context of the UK and be signposted to resources to support your learning and training objectives so that you can get the most out of this next stage in your career. The programme also offers you an opportunity to meet colleagues, share experiences and start building your professional network.

The programme includes:

  • Communication, context and perspective
  • Planning ahead and working with your Educational Supervisor
  • Building trust and rapport
  • Language for patient-centred consultations
  • ‘Active’ listening and picking up on patient cues
  • Using and reading non-verbal communication signals
